On June 15, NASCAR will make history by hosting the first-ever Cup Series points race outside the US at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. NASCAR commissioner Steve Phelps recently visited Brazil during the NASCAR Brazil round at Interlagos, marking his first international engagement.
During the Coca-Cola 600 race weekend, Phelps and Chad Seigler, Chief International Officer of NASCAR, discussed the potential of hosting a Cup race in Brazil. Phelps expressed enthusiasm for the idea but highlighted the need for all parties to collaborate for its realization.
While previous talks about bringing ‘The Clash’ to Brazil didn’t progress, Phelps is looking forward to the Mexican event, aiming to engage international fans and potentially expand NASCAR’s reach to Brazil in the future.
The integration of Brazilian talent with NASCAR is evolving, with projects like Mckenzie University’s collaboration on technical aspects and the prospect of Brazilian drivers competing in the Cup Series. NASCAR aims to welcome drivers from around the world, echoing the success of Daniel Suarez from Mexico and Shane Van Gisbergen from New Zealand. The vision includes nurturing Brazilian drivers to compete for wins and championships in NASCAR.
